So you’re going away on a relaxing retreat holiday and don’t want to lose control and all the progress you’ve made in staying fit. Perhaps it’s only for a few days and you don’t want to come back to “real life” –and your job– a sloppy mess. Well, there are some great ways to keep your routine on vacation. Let’s explore a few ideas together.
Everything except work
First off, let’s agree that when you’re on a holiday or retreat vacation, the one part of your daily routine you should notbe keeping up is your work. You’re not really taking a break if you’re still glued to your phone or laptop checking the office e-mail or taking client calls. That’s a no-no. You need to be mentally absent from the daily grind, not just physically absent. There are other ways to stay sharp and productive and keep your routine on vacation. So please unplug, simplify & reconnectwith your inner self!
One regular habit that wouldn’t be bad on holiday (even if it feels rigid at times), is staying organized. Nothing wrong with planning out each day with an itinerary, where you’re going and what you’re doing. It’s even ok to set an alarm and wake up early to remain productive on a retreat.
Even though you might be partying at night, make sure to give yourself enough sleep. This is just as important to your health while on vacation as it is at home on a weeknight. Try to get between 6 and 8 hours of good quality sleep. If this means calling it a night before the bar or restaurant empties out, that’s ok. Use that alarm we just mentioned to get out of bed at a reasonable hour, because oversleeping will just break your usual habit, and not keep your routine on vacation. Not convinced? While it’s true that you should treat yourself and enjoy the culinary pleasures when on holiday, you don’t want to overdo it either! Respect your body to keep your routine on vacation, with some healthy food choices. Don’t gorge on fatty dishes or dessert. Don’t exaggerate with the alcohol either. Yes, it may be fun for a couple of hours, but you know how you’ll feel in the morning. And what about all those empty calories? Truth is, you can even lose weightwhile on vacation, with the right choices.
If you choose the right holiday or retreat vacation, then getting exercise shouldn’t be a problem. Many hotels have a small gym available to guests, and if you go on an activity-based retreat, then every day should offer exercise of some kind. Give your heart and lungs a workout with a great hike through the local landscape, go on a kayaking river tour, or learn how to practice yoga! Ever heard of a self-defence retreat? Imagine an MMA Course in Thailand! Yes, this really exists and it’s awesome!
