When they think “boxing” or “fighting,” many people tend to associate these concepts with punching and traditional boxing gloves worn on the hands. But did you know that there’s a predominant style of boxing in Asia where you can practically make your whole body join the fight? It’s called “Muay Thai.” You may or may not have heard of it, but you can be guaranteed that with a bit of Muay Thai training, you’ll be literally “kicking” your opponent’s butt and “elbowing” your way to success.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport originally from Thailand and the national sport of the country. Similar to Western kickboxing, it is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” because fighters use their fists, elbows, knees, and shins in combination to attack and defend themselves. Today, the practice of Muay Thai has become widespread all over the world.

Origin

The earliest practices of Muay Thai made their appearance in the 16th century, during the wars between Siam (the former name for Thailand) and the Burmese of the Konbaung Dynasty. However, it was a famous hand-to-hand combat fighter named Nai Khanomtom that popularized this fighting style into a national Siamese sport. After he was captured by the Burmese in 1767, he was given an opportunity to fight for his freedom and won the battle hands down. He was recognized as a hero and his techniques soon became known as Siamese-Style boxing, later changing their name to Muay Thai.

Benefits of Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a highly beneficial activity to increase cardiovascular performance. It also enhances the strength and endurance of both the upper and lower musculatures of the body. In addition, the rotational nature of many Muay Thai moves, such as kicking and dodging, helps to build solid trunk muscles and increase hip mobility. Finally, and that is one of Retrigo’s core missions, Muay Thai practice is a highly efficient way to relieve stress. After all, when we’re focused on powerfully and accurately hitting our opponent, we don’t have time to worry about anything else, do we?
